Newsletter – February 2006

Happy New Year, SU alumni!  To kick off 2007, we have quite a few events planned and it’s time again for our annual GBSUAC Newsletter!   Check out our calendar of men’s basketball game watching events around the Boston area!  And all the photos that we’ve posted on-line from past events!  Mark your calendars for the 2007 New Student Send-Off!  Plus many more events are still being planned!  We need your input to help us organize them to your satisfaction!
Club News:

·        The GBSUAC Board is going through some changes.  Kristen Krikorian has assumed the role of President, while Matt Woodward continues on as the Webmaster.  We are always looking to expand the Board, especially in this time of reorganization, so let us know if you are interested!

·        Almost 100 SU alumni bought tickets for the Boston Celtics/Denver Nuggets game on December 15thWe cheered on SU alum Carmelo

Anthony as the home team Celtics walked away with the win.  The Meet-N-Greet was organized with ‘Melo, who unfortunately could not show up in the end.  Those alums that stuck around did get to meet Marcus Camby.  Check out the pictures from the game in the “Photos” section on the GBSUAC website.

·        Are you good with people and/or planning events, enthusiastic, and looking for a way to give back to SU?  If you answered "yes", then you may be looking to get more involved with the GBSUAC and we want to speak to you!  We have several positions open for the GBSUAC Board and are always looking to expand.  Please email us here for more information.

·       We received a small block of tickets for the SU/Providence game in RI on Saturday, February 24th.  Due to the high demand for tickets, we held a raffle for the opportunity to purchase these tickets for dues paying members.   The winners were picked in a random drawing on Feb 12th and were notified via email.

·        The GBSUAC website is a never-ending work in progress.  Our next endeavor has been to create a “Listings” page.  These listings will be sent in from SU alumni who are looking for jobs, apartments, roommates, or may even be looking to fill a position at their company.  The GBSUAC board will review them for content and then they will be posted to the website with contact information for members to peruse.  Email us at this page to get your listing posted!

·        Check out the new polls posted on the website.  We are looking for your level of interest in upcoming 2007 events and your thoughts on the details in order for us to plan them accordingly.   Feel free to send us an email instead of answering the poll or to ask a question.  For example:
-       Would you be interested in participating in a golf outing in September?
-       This Summer, I would be interested in: Kickball/Softball team.
-       I would like to take part in the Greater Boston Food Bank afternoon on National Orange Day - Sat, 3/24.

·        Saturday, March 24th, 2007 is National Orange Day, the official date Syracuse University was founded.  Now in its 14th year, it is an annual celebration that allows SU students, staff and alumni to join together to show their orange spirit and pride by volunteering in a variety of community service events.  The GBSUAC will be collecting canned good donations and volunteering at the  Greater Boston Food Bank  from 12:30pm - 4:00pm to separate, sort, inspect and package food, with a social event to follow.  More details will be forthcoming, but mark your calendars now!  It is sure to be a fun and rewarding experience for our SU alumni, as well as any friends and family who would also like to help us out!  There will be a limited number of volunteers at the Food Bank, so please RSVP as soon as possible for you and your friends/family with the names and number of volunteers that will be attending to:  Email Kristen here.

·        The 2007 New Student Send-Off will be held at Hopkinton State Park on Sunday, August 12th from Noon – 4pm.   The GBSUAC welcomes

both the incoming freshman class as well as transfer students to our New Student Sendoff.  There will be current students on hand, as well as alumni and University representatives, to answer questions, provide information about the school and much more.  We need volunteers to help out and provide valuable insight (especially those recent graduates who know what SU is like today!).  Email us here if you are interested in volunteering!

Upcoming Events: STAY TUNED FOR MORE DETAILS!

·        We would like to plan a Golf Outing for the Fall and we need to know who may be interested and how you might want it to work so we can plan the details accordingly.  We are thinking of getting a prominent SU keynote speaker for the reception to follow.  Check out the polls on the website or send us an email and let us know if you would be interested.

·        Would you be interested in joining a GBSUAC Kickball or Softball team?  Would you like to be the Captain of the team?  We have received inquiries about an SU alumni team participating in a Boston area league and are looking for a Captain!  Check out the poll on the website or send us an email.

·        Our Career Night will be coming up in the Spring.  This will be a great opportunity to network and to listen to some prominent SU alumni in the Boston area tell us how they got where they are today!  We will also be congratulating the SU Class of 2007 recent graduates and welcoming them as alumni to the Boston area.  If you are interested in sponsoring this great event or would like to volunteer to be a speaker or help out in anyway, please email us here for more information.

·        Join us for another night of beer tasting at the Harpoon Brewery this Winter.  We will taste beer and talk about the brewery (and the brewing process) from the tasting room that overlooks the brewery floor.  Check out the pictures from last year’s event on the website.

·        We are working with other Boston area Big East school alumni clubs to organize a Big East Event this Spring!  Stay tuned for details.

·        Don’t forget that you can sign up and renew your GBSUAC membership on the website.  You can pay via Paypal or send a check to the GBSUAC.  Membership will provide you priority to some exclusive events like SU football and basketball game tickets, Red Sox tickets, etc.

·        If you are interested in participating in a specific event or would like to help plan something, feel free to email us with your ideas, suggestions and/or comments!  Or stop by a future Board Meeting to let your voice be heard!

SU in the News

·        If you have any of your own exciting news that you would like to share (you just got married, promoted, had a baby, engaged, etc.), please email Kristen here and we will include it in our next GBSUAC newsletter!

·        http://www.iListOnline.com, started by Syracuse University Alumni, offers a free online service where Students, Alumni and Teachers (from 700+ Universities) can create a safe, secure and trusted online space where they can network, collaborate and share knowledge and information. This service is meant to create a symbiosis of Students, Alumni and Teachers, irrespective of their University affiliation, and is trying to demolish the existing University boundaries which divide them. This service offers many features, such as blogs, collaborative documents (books), photos, groups, forums, polls, bookmarks, network, messaging etc. Users can post content once and show it in different groups in one go, and thus control access to their own posted content. To quote a few possibilities, imagine an online space where Syracuse University Alumni can read blogs posted by other Syracuse University Alumni (and from other Universities as well); Where they can bookmark a Teacher blogger from Stanford about Economics and keep track of his recent blogs; Where they can network with Alumni of Columbia and can write a collaborative research paper with a Student of Cornell and form a ‘Red sox -Yankees’ group for all universities located in Boston and New York; Where they can use this service to see all blogs posted by Students majoring in Business Management from all Universities; Where they can use the classifieds section to answer questions posted by prospective students of Syracuse University ….and the possibilities are simply unlimited!  To get your Alumni account on www.iListOnline.com , register today using your Syracuse University Alumni email address and get connected. You can get your SU Alumni email at - https://www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/SYR/register.html
